Jewelry/Piercing Questions

What are the healing times for piercings?

Each area of the body has its own unique healing period and process.Oral and facial piercings tend to heal fastest and every individual heals and reacts to piercings differently.

A general guideline for approximate healing times is as follows:

  • Earlobe: 1-2 months

  • Cartilage: 6 months-2 years

  • Lip: 1-2 months

  • Labret: 1-2 months

  • Cheek: 2-3 months

  • Nostril: 3 months-1 year

  • Eyebrow: 2-3 months

  • Tongue: 1-2 months

  • Septum: 1-2 months

  • Navel: 6 months-over 1 year

  • Nipple: 3-6 months

  • Genital: 2-8 months

How long before I can change the initial piercing jewelry?

It is not recommended to change initial piercing jewelry until your piercing is fully healed, unless the new piece of jewelry is sterile. Many piercings will require a change of jewelry during the healing period as the swelling of your piercing is reduced; however, this should be done by your piercer with sterilized jewelry.

If you want to change the jewelry yourself, wait until the new piercing has healed and developed a tough barrier of healthy skin between the piercin gand the jewelry. Reopening the wound will delay the healing process and cancause infection. Wait until the piercing is no longertender (you can play with your piercing without experiencing any discomfort). Use as much care and be as clean as possible when changing your jewelry for the first time.

How do I change my piercing jewelry?

When handling or changing your body jewelry, always clean your hands, preferably with anti-bacterial soap. A hot shower or hot compress will helps often your skin before cleaning and inserting body jewelry.

1. Pinch the skin adjacent to the piercing and insert one end of the body jewelry into one hole of the piercing.

2. Wearing jewelry of the correct size in your body piercing is important. If the body jewelry is too short it will aggravate the piercing; if it's too long the body jewelry can get caught or snagged which also causes aggravation and might even cause tiny tears in the tissue, which can lead to scarring or infection.

Take a ruler and measure the distance between the two holes in millimeters. Once you have a measurement round it up to the closest even number in millimeters. (i.e 11.5 becomes 12mm, 13mm becomes 14mm. To order jewelry pick the proper Gauge (thickness of the bar) and then order the length (which is the distance in between the two balls or the diameter of the ring at its widest point) that matches the measurement of your piercing.

How do I stretch my ears?

Stretching a piercing is a gradual process as it's important to allow ample healing time between sizes (at least 4 weeks). Stretching too fast can damage the skin which can result in scarring.

The best and easiest way to stretch without any problems is with insertion tapers. They are used to stretch up a piercing one size at a time. To stretch from 14g to 12g you would use a 12g insertion taper, which starts at 14g and gradually increases in size to 12g. Lubricate the taper with KY jelly and push it slowly through your piercing. Once the taper is fed all of the way through the piercing, place the jewelry on the end of the taper and push it though. Expect some soreness as your lobes heal and adjust to the new size. Wait at least 4 weeks before stretching up to the next gauge.

The second best way to stretch is called Subang Method. This is where you place one layer of teflon tape on your jewelry. Lubricate the tape and push it slowly through your piercing. Wait at least 4 weeks before stretching up to the next gauge.

Will my stretched earlobe close down to its original size again?

Generally speaking, the larger your stretch your earlobe, the harder it will be to downsize the stretch. As you stretch the flesh it naturally loses its elasticity. Most people find that piercings of 0g and smaller can be downsized fairly easily, although this process will be gradual. Keep the skin healthy by moisturizing and massaging regularly which will stimulate the tissue and increase blood-flow to the pierced area.

What materials can be worn in my piercing?

Jewelry can be made of a variety of materials, although some are better for your piercings than others.

316LVM Surgical Stainless Steel is safe to be worn for people without a nickel-allergy, as this metal contains Nickel. Surgical Stainless Steel used for bone fixation screws, body pins, bone plates, total joint prosthetics amongst many other applications. Body jewelry listed here is manufactured from equivalent or higher standard material. We do not play or gamble with your health.

Titanium is a very strong metal, stronger than stainless steel and 45%lighter. Titanium does not react with the body, so most people; even those with metal sensitivities can wear Titanium. We use grade 23, which is implant grade;the same material the medical industry uses for joint replacements as well aspins and rods. No higher qualification exists. Titanium can be coloured using a process called anodizing. Anodizing is a fast and simple electrical process that grows very thin transparent oxides onthe surface of the reactive metals. There are no pigments or dyes, the Titanium surface makeup is altered therefore this colour cannot 'chip' or 'wear away'. It takes high voltage to produce the colours; different voltages give you different colours.

Black PVD Coating comprises ofa PVD coating on G23 Surgical Titanium. PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) has become widely used to deposit wear resistant, thin film coatings onto medical devices (including heart pacemakers, surgical instruments, and orthopaedic implants). The main value in PVD technology rests in the ability to modify the surface propertiesof a device without changing the underlying material's properties and biochemical functionality.

Bioflex is a biocompatible plastic polymer. The benefits for using BioFlex include less swelling, infections and faster healing times. BioFlex jewelry is flexible, hypoallergenic, and autoclavable. It can be cut to the proper length and threaded with a threader or threaded bead. Bioflex is suitable for use in navel piercings of pregnant women because of it's flexibility; they bend to allow the stomach to expand.

PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene),also known as Teflon, is an amazing inert biomaterial with excellent biocompatibility characteristics. PTFE has amazing 'Non-Stick' properties, lymph does not stick to it. PTFE is also suitable for initial piercings and those taking along time to heal. Perfect for work if you're not allowed to wear jewelry, or if you're going into hospital.

Gold, no matter what the karat, is not recommended for initial piercings because gold is an alloy, made upof not only pure karat gold but base metals also. The fluids secreted by a healing piercing cause corrosion of the base metals in the gold. Once a piercing is fully healed, Gold can be worn (14ct gold is recommended), although best for limited periods of time as they will tarnish and discolour when in contact with bodily fluids. Try to keep the jewelry clean and polished regularly to prolong the quality.

Sterling Silver should not be used for piercing body jewelry, but can be worn on the body as general jewelry, in the form necklaces, bracelets, pendants and rings.Silver body jewelry accessories such as clip-in ball closure ring captives are also a popular, safe choice. Silver corrodes when it comes in contact with sulphur, which your body contains and this contact forms toxic substances - Silver Salt.

Glass is most commonly worn in stretched piercings. The biocompatible characteristics of glass make it an ultra compatible material for implantation and for body jewelry wear. Many companies are now manufacturing jewelry from poor quality recycled glass, which means that its origins and qualities are flawed and untraceable. There is absolutely no lead in any of our glass body jewelry. Every piece is hand crafted and inspected to perfect standards creating new products for a new generation.

Wood is a natural, porous (absorbent) material only recommended for mature/fully healed piercings or stretched ears. We do not recommend that wood is submerged in water for long periods of time and avoid any drastic changes in temperature or humidity.

Buffalo Horn/Bone body jewelry should not be worn in new or unhealed body piercingsas this is a porous (absorbent), natural material. Buffalo Horn should not be exposed to any extreme temperature. Do not autoclave or heat-sterilize any of these products. Buffalo Horn

Silicone piercing jewelry is manufactured from certifiedbiocompatible silicone, acquired from one of Europe'slargest pharmaceutical suppliers. Our silicone meets the requirements of thefollowing: European Pharmacopoeia, Deutsches Arzneibuch, U.S.Pharmacopoeia Plastics of Class V1. Our silicone also meets the requiremements of EN30993 / ISO 10993, 'Biologicalassessment of medical products' and its' biocompatibility is tested accordingto the guidelines of the Triparite Test of the U.S. Phamacopoeia. The dye has been mixed in a ratio of 1:300and has passed the German BGA medical standard. All silicone is tested for 30days continuous body implant, however all silicone accessories are intended fortemporary application only and designed to cover 6mm barbell ball.
